Surabaya dubbed as the city of the heroes after the fiery spirit of their ancestor who bravely fought for their long-awaited independence. One of the most historical battle happened during the 10 November 1945 war.
To carry on the spirit, they built an exquisite monument to commemorate the heroes endeavor. This monument is located at the city center near the governor’s office. This monumental building is known as Tugu Pahlawan (The Monument of The Heroes).
Tugu Pahlawan is open for tourist every day but Monday. The best time to visit the monument is during the car-free day event on Sunday morning. The car-free day event is an annual event held by the city of Surabaya that starts every Sunday on 6 AM – 9 AM on 4 different areas namely Darmo Street, Tunjungan Street, Pahlawan Street, and Kembang Jepun Street.
The historical monument with the height of 41 meters offers you more than historical site. During the car-free day period, you will find numbers of amusing activity you can do on your visit. The most to-do activity is to tastes the local delicacies provided by the street hawker, ranging from traditional food to modern snacks.
The Tugu Pahlawan area is built on a square full of grass and surrounded by shady trees. The canopied pathways surrounding the area are very well-maintained, you will spot corners filled with colorful flowers on its side.
Once you are on Tugu Pahlawan Area, do drop a visit to another monumental landmark in the area. Among them are the iconic statues of Mr. Soekarno and Mr. Moh. Hatta, The Museum of 10 November 1945, and the grave of the unknown heroes.
The iconic statues of the founding fathers of Indonesia, Mr. Soekarno and Mr. Moh. Hatta was placed in the ruin of the colonial’s building. The gigantic size of the artistic statues makes it popular among the tourist. Most tourists will perform a photo taking activity around it.
Last but not least, spare some time to visit The Grave of The Unknown Heroes where they buried all the unknown fighters at the battle of 10 November 1945.
Getting There
Tugu Pahlawan is located at Jalan Pahlawan, Surabaya. To reach Surabaya, you can opt to fly to Juanda Airport. The airport is one of the busiest airports in Indonesia as they serve numerous flight destinations for you. Or you can also hop on a train to Gubeng Station, the biggest station in Surabaya.
